The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially opened applications for the 2026 Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) Overseas Scholarship Scheme, inviting qualified Nigerian postgraduate candidates to apply for fully-funded Master’s (MSc) and Doctoral (PhD) programmes abroad. The announcement was confirmed in a post on X (formerly Twitter) by the Office of the Special Adviser to the President on Social Media, Dada Olusegun.
What the 2026 PTDF Overseas Scholarship Includes
According to PTDF, the scholarship scheme is designed to empower Nigerians with advanced academic training and research exposure in key disciplines related to the oil and gas sector. The programme covers a wide range of benefits for successful applicants, including:
- Tuition fees at partner universities abroad.
- Return international flight tickets.
- Accommodation and living allowances.
- Health insurance, and
- Bench fees where applicable.
The initiative aims to provide access to world-class training, research facilities and global expertise while developing indigenous human capacity critical to Nigeria’s energy industry.
Where You Can Study
According to the PTDF announcement, eligible postgraduate applicants can study at partner universities in four countries, including:
- United Kingdom
- Germany
- France
- Malaysia
For PhD candidates in the United Kingdom, the scheme will be conducted under a split-site arrangement, enabling research to be shared between the College of Petroleum and Energy Studies, Kaduna (CPESK) and affiliated UK institutions such as Robert Gordon University, University of Strathclyde, and the University of Portsmouth.
Eligibility and Selection Criteria
The PTDF Overseas Scholarship is competitive and open to Nigerians who meet established academic and professional requirements, such as:
- A relevant first degree with a minimum of Second Class Lower (2.2) or higher (for MSc).
- Completed National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) service.
- Computer literacy and acceptable O-Level qualifications.
- PhD applicants must also submit a strong research proposal aligned with national development needs.
Applicants are advised to ensure their National Identity Number (NIN) is verified prior to submission and to upload clear copies of all required documents.
How to Apply and Deadline
Prospective candidates must submit applications online via the official PTDF scholarship portal at scholarship.ptdf.gov.ng and ensure all details are accurate. The application process is fully digital, and the deadline for submissions is 27 February 2026.
The PTDF emphasises that the scholarship scheme is highly competitive, and only those who demonstrate outstanding academic merit and suitability will be considered for awards.
